The Art of Not Procrastinating: Why Not Right Now?

That’s what I asked myself last night when I realized that it’s been a while since I have just “driven” Athena (my car). I love to drive. Not drive here and there but actually to drive with no destination and to just feel the road through my car. I was laying in bed dealing with life’s daily obstacles and I asked myself “Why not right now?”, so that is what I did. I got up out of bed, put on layers of clothes (due to the cold weather), grabbed my license, keys, and headed downstairs to my car.

We all procrastinate. This is the truth. Even the most successful people in the world procrastinate at one point in time. The difference between them and the unsuccessful is that they do not procrastinate as long or as often. With so much out there it is easy for us to procrastinate and not see it as procrastinating but merely “taking a break”. There are so many methods out there that we can use to combat procrastination. However, an effective method we can use is asking ourselves the simple question “Why not right now?” and when we realize that WE are the reason WHY, we go do it RIGHT NOW. You’ve been wanting to lose weight, clean your house, finish that project for work/school, make time for family, learn Russian, Why not right now? Do not over think it, it is as simple as that.

While at the track doing sprints I was talking to my trainer about the theme of this blog before I had even written it. She told me about how a relative of her’s would tell her “Not to Scarlett O’Hara”. This character, from Gone With the Wind, is famous for always saying “I’ll think about that tomorrow” when faced with difficult situations. With her saying that, I realized that a lot of us have that same “Scarlett” mindset because we believe tomorrow is promised to us, when it is not.
